The independent activity of railway passenger transportation in Kazakhstan was formed on July 14, 1998 by creating subsidiary state enterprise Passenger Transportation in the structure of the republican state enterprise Kazakhstan Temir Zholy.
In 2002, on the basis of the state enterprise, Passenger transportation joint-stock company was established.
In 2004, the restructuring of the providing and servicing activities was carried out, which was aimed at its separation from the main and targeted subsidizing of passenger transportation from the republican and local budgets. As part of the implementation of the Restructuring Program, work was carried out to create 6 joint-stock companies as part of Passenger Transportation JSC: Almatinskiy Vagonoremontnyy Zavod, Vokzal Service, Suburban Transportation, Baggage Transportation, Passenger Carriage Lease Company, "Vagonservice", "ZHolserik-Almaty" LLP (in 2005 it was renamed to the company "Zholaushylartrans").
On December 25, 2004, by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Passenger Transportation JSC was granted the status of a National Carrier.
At present, the structure of Passenger Transportation JSC includes 4 branches - Yuzhnyy, Zapadnyy, Severnyy and "Express" and 2 subsidiaries ("Suburban Transportation" JSC, Vagonservice JSC ), with 100% participation.
