KTZ has begun implementing a set of measures to prepare for spring floods
06-02-2026
Kazakhstan Temir Zholy National Company JSC has begun work to ensure train safety and protect railway infrastructure during the upcoming spring floods. The company has approved a plan of organizational and technical measures aimed at preventing track washouts and ensuring uninterrupted service.
In preparation for the spring of 2026, railway workers are carrying out a range of work across the entire mainline network: clearing snow, ice, and debris from bridges, culverts, and ditches. Particular attention is being paid to regions with a high risk of flooding.
Work is underway to strengthen earthen embankments and create drainage systems to minimize the impact of meltwater on the railway track. In the mountainous and northern regions (Zashchitinsky, Atbasarsky, Yesilsky, and Ekibastuzsky sections), drilling and blasting operations are planned to prevent uncontrolled snow avalanches and the formation of ice jams on rivers. Monitoring of hydraulic structures and water levels in reservoirs near railway lines has been strengthened. Locomotive crews have been instructed to immediately report any threats.
Five regions are currently under high risk of spring flooding.
Akmola, North Kazakhstan, Karaganda, East Kazakhstan, and Abai regions are in the high-risk zone.
Ulytau, Zhetysu, Kostanay, West Kazakhstan, and Almaty regions are in the medium-risk zone.
There are over 670 potentially hazardous locations along the main railway network, which are receiving special attention.
