KTZ discussed measures to improve railway safety

KTZ hosted a round table on improving safety in railway transport, chaired by Deputy Chairman of the Board Marat Shakenov. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Chief Transport Prosecutor's Office, the Department of the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Transport, the Transport Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The event was held as part of the implementation of the "Law and Order" concept. Participants discussed the causes of railway accidents and the measures required to prevent them.

In 2025, 66 cases of trains striking people were registered on the railway, and 24 cases were recorded in the first five months of 2026. The main causes include violation of the rules for being on the tracks, citizens being intoxicated, using headphones while crossing tracks, and suicidal incidents. The highest number of incidents was recorded in the Almaty, Karaganda, and Kyzylorda regions.

At the same time, the Company maintains positive dynamics in traffic safety indicators. In the first five months of 2026, the number of traffic safety violations in KTZ decreased by 4%, totaling 49 cases. Over the past five years, the number of violations has been decreasing annually by an average of 4%. Among the CIS countries, Kazakhstan Railways ranks 2nd in ensuring traffic safety.

Particular attention was paid to the situation on private siding tracks of industrial enterprises. In the first five months of this year, 91 derailments of rolling stock occurred here, which is 18% higher than the figure for the same period last year. A total of 168 wagons and 18 locomotives were damaged.

As noted during the discussion, the main causes of derailments are the unsatisfactory condition of the tracks, violations of shunting operation technologies, improper loading and unloading of wagons, as well as insufficient oversight of infrastructure operations.

The participants highlighted that a significant portion of the risks is concentrated precisely on private siding tracks, where the ability to monitor compliance with safety requirements is limited.

KTZ continues to implement a comprehensive set of measures to improve the safety of the transportation process. These include the interagency Roadmap for Ensuring Safety and Property Preservation for 2025–2027, a program for developing a traffic safety culture, the modernization of rolling stock and infrastructure, audits of the traffic safety management system, and the digitalization of processes.

As part of the digital transformation, the "Traffic Safety Inspector" and "Audit" automated systems have been introduced, along with new tools for monitoring the condition of infrastructure facilities. In addition, locomotives are being equipped with video recording devices, and a video surveillance system is being deployed on the most hazardous sections of the railway network.

Following the meeting, additional measures were developed aimed at reducing injuries, preventing transport accidents, and increasing the overall level of safety in railway transport.
