Kazakhstan railways undergo infrastructure modernization and repair work
04-06-2026
KTZ is conducting large-scale work to modernize and repair railway infrastructure. As part of infrastructure projects, more than 3,000 km of railway lines are being modernized.
To date, 1,209 km of track have already been modernized on the Kyzylzhar–Saksaulskaya, Altynkol–Zhetygen, and Aksu–Zhana-Semey sections. The work is being carried out in accordance with approved schedules, with completion planned for 2026.
In parallel, a track repair campaign is being implemented, which schedules the repair of 1,577 km of railway track this year. The campaign started in February in the southern regions of Kazakhstan. Following the results of the first quarter, 288 km of track have been repaired. With the onset of the summer period, operations have been deployed across all regions of the country.
The ongoing measures are aimed at increasing the throughput capacity of the railway network, ensuring the safety of train movements, and maintaining established travel speeds on the sections.
Track modernization and repair work is a technically and technologically complex process. To perform these tasks, technological "windows"—temporary pauses in train traffic—are provided, which are necessary for the safe execution of work and ensuring train safety.
Extended technological "windows" are scheduled on the Astana–Almaty, Astana–Tobol, Kokshetau–Kostanay, Kandyagash–Tobol, Astana–Pavlodar, and Arys–Saryagash sections. These routes are among the busiest on the country's railway network, with a significant number of passenger and freight trains operating daily.
Due to the execution of work on certain sections, temporary train speed limits are being introduced to ensure the safety of the transportation process. This may impact passenger train schedules and cargo transit.
JSC NC KTZ asks passengers, shippers, and consignees to treat the temporary inconveniences with understanding. The ongoing work is aimed at improving train safety, railway infrastructure reliability, and the overall quality of the transportation process.
