Kazakhstan and China Strengthen Railway Cooperation

23-01-2026

A meeting between Talgat Aldybergenov, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC NC KTZ, and Guo Jian, Chairman of the Management Board of Urumqi Railways LLC, took place at Alashankou Station.

During the talks, the parties summarized the results of rail transportation between Kazakhstan and China for 2025 and discussed plans for 2026, the implementation of electronic document management and paperless technologies, as well as issues related to freight, commercial, locomotive, wagon, and track operations.

At the end of the year, growth in transportation volumes and exports were noted for key cargo categories—metals, petroleum products, coal, and chemical products—as well as a threefold increase in grain and animal feed shipments.

The Kazakh delegation reported on the implementation of infrastructure projects, including the launch of dual tracks on the Dostyk-Moiynty section, the modernization of the Altynkol-Zhetygen section, and the implementation of the third border crossing project, Bakhty-Tacheng.

Particular attention was paid to the reception of grain cargo and the reduction of laboratory testing times, including the organization of sample shipments to Urumqi.

During the visit, the Kazakh delegation toured the production infrastructure of Alashankou Station, including transshipment terminals, a bonded warehouse, a dispatch center, production buildings for the transfer office, and a dormitory for shift workers.

Alashankou Station remains China's largest border railway hub, equipped with modern receiving and dispatching tracks and specialized terminals for handling various cargoes, including grain, vegetable oil, fertilizers, and iron ore. A monument unveiling ceremony commemorating the 35th anniversary of the connection of the railways of Kazakhstan and China was also held at Dostyk Station. Talgat Aldybergenov, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC NC KTZ, and Guo Jian, Chairman of the Management Board of Urumqi Railways, attended the event.

It was noted that 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of the opening of the Dostyk-Alashankou border crossing. Since its inception, over 425 million tons of cargo have been transported through this crossing.

The protocol of the Final Working Meeting of the Border Railways of Kazakhstan and China was signed. The parties emphasized the strategic importance of the crossing for the development of international transport corridors and transit traffic. Kazakhstan reaffirmed its role as a reliable land bridge, providing China with access to markets in Europe, the Caspian region, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

The unveiling of the monument symbolizes the contribution of generations of railway workers from both countries to the development of international transportation, as well as the further strengthening of the Kazakh-Chinese partnership in the transport sector.
