The 700th milestone locomotive has been manufactured in Astana

Astana-based JSC "Lokomotiv kurastyru zauyty" (LKZ), a subsidiary of the international Wabtec Corporation, has manufactured its 700th locomotive. Out of these, 655 units are operated within the fleet of JSC "NC "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy".

To mark the production of this milestone locomotive, a ceremonial event was held at the plant. Marat Shakenov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of JSC "NC "KTZ", highlighted LKZ's significant contribution to the development of locomotive manufacturing and the strengthening of the railway industry's production base.

​​​​​​​Over its 17 years of operation, LKZ has grown into one of the largest locomotive manufacturers in Kazakhstan. The plant employs more than 530 people and has a production capacity of up to 120 locomotives per year.

The facility manufactures Evolution Series freight locomotives. Its products are exported to Azerbaijan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan.

A production and service cluster has been established around LKZ, employing over 1,400 specialists. They provide manufacturing, repair, and maintenance services for locomotives, equipment, and spare parts.

The Trip Optimizer system is being implemented on Evolution freight locomotives, which automates specific train control processes, helps reduce fuel consumption, and enhances operational efficiency. The system has been installed on locomotives on a commercial scale since 2024.

LKZ also contributes to training specialists for the railway industry. Since 2011, more than 150 students have completed their practical training at the plant. The company collaborates with specialized colleges and universities.

KTZ and LKZ are jointly implementing social projects. Currently, construction is underway for a Children’s Palace in Sekseul (Kyzylorda region) and an arts school in Shalkar (Aktobe region).
